Preparation for my music video

Preparation for my music video

I looked on websites such as YouTube and Sound cloud and browsed the internet for British artists who's songs are not copyrighted.
I came across Josh Daily an artist from Brighton. having listened through is songs on sound cloud I decided to choose his song "your still the one" .

Having been granted permission by Josh I emailed him and asked him about what possible ideas he may already have. he gave me a list of music videos that have particular shots that he really likes and would like me to replicate in my music video.
The British alternative rock band "The 1975" music is very similar to Josh daily songs "Your still the one".

Here are the songs that Josh sent me via email.
SOHN, lessons.
2The 1975, Chocolate
3The 1975, Robbers
4The 1975, Settle Down

With the videos that Josh had sent he also said what he liked about them and what shots he would like.

Below is our email conversation discussing techniques that he likes from different music videos, i have tried to use these same shots in my music video

Researching in to a music director and their previous work.

John Landis was born in 1950 and is an American film director, screenwriter, actor and producer. he is known for his comedy and horror movies, as well as his work with Micheal Jackson.
Landis directed movies such as, American werewolf in London, trading places, National Lampoons animal house and Beverly hills cop 3.
In 1978 Landis directed his first film for universal studios.
The Blues Brothers a comedy which starred blues legend such as James brown, Aretha franklin, Ray Charles. which succeeded both critically and financially.
At the time it was one the most expensive movies made just like thriller it seems Landis really does splash out on his budgets.

John Landis directed the music video for Michael Jacksons song "Thriller". The song and video won many awards. The Video was Made in 1983,just two years after MTV was founded Marketing wise this is a great time to release a music video for a massive mainstream artist however in 1983 Micheal Jackson struggled to receive air time due to the so called "colour barrier".

John Landis spent half a million dollars on the music video which was the most expensive Music video ever made at the time. Jackson and Landis managed to get MTV and showtime to fund their budget by getting them to pay $250,000 .

The music video actually broke down racial barriers as Eddie-Van Hallen contributed to the song.

Analysis of music videos which are from the same genre

A music video, most of the time relates to the lyrics in the song and what it is about Music Videos explain visually what the song is about. However sometimes a music video could be the artist or band singing and playing the song and nothing more.

In Iron Maiden's Music video for 'Run to The Hills' you have certain scenes of the band playing the song on stage with loads of Marshall amplifiers (an example of product placement) and in other scenes you are shown what the song is about.
The song 'Run to The Hills' is about The European arrival to the new world. The first scene we see is the band playing the intro and once the vocals start it then it switches to black and white to show you that they have gone back in time. We then see a Red Indian man with a tin that says ROUGE in his hand (French for red). As he opens up the tin he applies the substance casually to his face this shows the Red Indian going about his usual routine. as the music video goes on it follows the lyrics and shows how the white man has ruined these peoples lives Hence the name of the song "Run to The Hills"

The music video Paradise city was filmed in the New Jersey Giants stadium as a tribute to two fans who died at the concert. The video is filmed in black and white and colour just like the "Run to The Hills" music video.

How ever the black and white represented the past in the music video. the music video for paradise city shows the band setting up and going about their normal routine when they are playing a gig, just like the run to the hills video. in terms of editing, straight cuts and panning of the stadium also a lot of the video is filmed whilst the camera man is moving around this makes it look similar to a documentary.

Stormzy is an up and coming London Grime artist who recently burst through the charts with most of his songs being viewed on the internet and not on tv channels. His music videos are very different as it is a completely different genre of music to rock. This picture is taken from the song Shut up which is about people giving him hate. Budget plays a key factor in this music video obviously Stormzy is not as well known as bands such as Guns n Roses and iron maiden as grime is not a mainstream genre of music.
How ever the use of product placement is obvious in this video as brands have given the artist free clothes that he wears daily. with over 6,371602 views this is bound to have influence on  at least a few of the viewers next purchase.

Techniques used in this video are simple as it is done in one take however the back ground is blurred so the attention is on Stormzy.

Red hot Chilli Peppers music video for "Dani California"
goes through time starting off with them on a stage (just like iron maiden and Guns N Roses.) dressed as Elvis presley and his band and it is filmed in black and white. They go on to be dressed as different bands though out the video but still stay on the same stage.

Black and white filming is used yet again to represent the past however the era they are representing is the 50's-60's. As they go on to bands like the Motley Crue it goes back to colour filming.
when the band change costume to look like the bands they are impersonating they copy the music video to one of there songs and use the same camera angles such as close ups, Low and medium angled shots, zoom ins and focus pull.

Girls on Film was a massive hit single in the UK in 1981 and this was a very controversial Music video as it was purely a video showing of woman in a sexual way. the woman in this video are dressed in nothing more than skimpy body suits or bikinis. However like iron maiden they are still seen on stage performing. Camera angles used in this video such as the low angle shot are used to show off the womens body.

Early on in the video there is close up of a woman's lower torso showing her underwear whilst slowly dragging her lower body across a pole covered in white cream.

Then we switch to an establishing shot of two girls sitting on a beam in fluffy lingerie with a man who gives them pillows to fight. your stereotypical play boy image. the music video was directed by the duo of Godley and Creme.

The music video was filmed just weeks before the Music Channel MTV was launched in the united states and know one had any idea of how much of an impact it would have on the industry. The raunchy music video created an uproar amongst TV channels, it was banned on the BBC. Heavily edited before being aired on MTV, however the band enjoyed and capitalize the controversy.

Research in to existing music labels.

A record label is a brand or trademark associated with the marketing of music recording and music videos.

Over the years Record labels have shifted through the rankings for example Warner Music was the number one music label in the late 80's and now is the 3rd biggest label. where as Universal music group were the 5th in the late 80's they are now the biggest label.

Today's big three company's in order are 1st Universal Music Group,2nd Sony Music Entertainment 3rd Warner Music. These three Music labels are known as conglomerate holding company's these company's often have non music divisions as well.

A music group controls and consists of music publishing companies, record manufacturers ,distributors and labels. As of 2007 "the big four" music groups control roughly 70% of the world music market and about 80% of the United States music industry.
This makes it harder for small independent Record labels to make money with in the music industry.

Universal Music Group

Universal muscic group is the biggest music corporation in the world, UMG is an american based company owned by the French.
UMG also owns universal music group publishing group which is the second biggest music publisher in the world. so you could UMG are doing pretty well in business.

UMG has always been a part of another company and in 1996 this is when it got its current name as UMG however before 1996, UMG were once attached to Film Studios Universal Pictures. its origins go back to  the formation of Decca Records in 1934. The Decca Record CO. LTD. of England spun american Decca records of and joined back in 1969.
